Baptism
Why in the world would someone choose to be baptized? Great question! It looks like someone is just dunked under the water. What is so unusual or special about that?
First of all, you need to understand the original rationale behind baptism. It was embraced by Jesus to help people identify with this new movement of people following Him. People would come into a relationship with Jesus and would declare that decision publicly by being “dunked.” In His time, that was dangerous stuff! Today, we may not be persecuted if we are baptized, but it certainly is a special moment; kind of like a mark in the sand for all to see.
The church throughout history took the lead of Jesus: being baptized was a way for people to let the faith community know that they stood with the cause of Jesus. We continue it today in obedience to Jesus and as a way to identify with other followers of His. When we are baptized, the community gathers and commits to support us, to pray for us, and to stand with us as followers of Jesus. We get to share our story in action! Cool stuff!
So, what if you were baptized as a young child through the choice of your parents? That is very cool, too! We think you should consider adding to that experience by making your own choice to be baptized now that you have made a choice to follow Jesus.
